The value of good insulation cannot be stressed enough. It's very difficult, if not impossible, to make a home efficient when it's poorly insulated. The type of insulation you choose is important for performance and personal health, but proper installation is really the most crucial component for effectiveness. Left over holes and gaps where heat can escape and cold air can get in are all too common. Spray foam insulations are becoming popular because of the superior coverage they can achieve. If you're going to use traditional fiberglass batts, look for the formaldehyde free ones.
